I would like to relate the Maslow's hierarchy of needs to this. Each of us constantly keep growing and reach the various levels in Maslow's hierarchy. We have been gifted a decent life and we take all the effort to constantly keep growing. This growth may not be an intellectual growth. It is not climbing the hierarchy, rather growing inside a particular level. Rather, the growth terminates once it reaches the level of esteem. The leap is a huge one between steps 4 and 5 in Maslow's hierarchy and only a very few reach there.
The simple principle of climbing the hierarchy lies in the fact that the growth has to be mutual. It cannot be attributed to a single individual all by himself. Only when someone starts thinking truly of his society, can he attain self-actualization. Becoming financially famous doesn't really get you fame unless you spend it usefully. We can live in a palace , buy diamonds and BMW and eat cashews, pistas and almonds. But our brothers and sisters who are miles away from us don't have even a roof to protect them from sun or rain. While we waste tons and tons of food, they don't get even a grain of rice :( We can honestly climb and go to the state of self-actualization only when we enable our family who is away from us to atleast enter Maslow's hierarchy. Let each of us be a change maker and have this thought in our mind everytime we eat. If we pick only what we want, and dont waste what we picked to eat, 2 people can eat somewhere in the corner of the world!
